QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What are the costs of servicing?
The service costs vary slightly from model to model due to part prices, however we give here a guide to the basic cost of the various services including parts, labour and VAT, using genuine Lancia parts.

It is worth mentioning at this point, that when repairs, service, cam belt changes are carried cut by an Authorised Lancia Dealer such as ourselves using Genuine Parts, Lancia/Fiat then Warranties those parts used against failure for the following 12 months and that Warranty includes both parts and labour costs connected thereto and is valid across Europe (Claims must be made through Lancia UK.) So why take the risk of having your cam belt changed elsewhere ? Check the cost of failure.

All prices quoted here are subject to change due to part price fluctuations from Lancia and are thus a guide only Please always ask for a current quote before any work is commenced

What are the most expensive things that can go wrong?

There are three major failures that can occur and they can all be avoided. However we are happy to help you repair them after you have forgotten to; change the cam belts at 24,000 miles, forgotten to, dip the oil level and run short of oil whilst cornering hard and then shown off it's 0-60 time once too many times.

Broken cam belts. Cause; Insufficient servicing. Repair cost £1500.00
Clutch failure. Cause: drive enthusiasm. Repair cost £700.00
Crankshaft failure. Cause; failure of No.3 Big-end bearing
due to low oil level. Repair cost
£1800.00 to £2000.00

(If there is hole in the crankcase, new 16v engine costs £4800.00 fitted.)

What will need replacement and at what sort at intervals ?

8v Cambelts are due for change at 36,000 miles.
16v Cam belts should be changed at 24,000 miles if you wish to avoid breakage.

Clutches can last 60,000 miles even in 280BHP cars, but if you can't spin the wheels the clutch is between a rock and a hard place, something has to slip and when it does very high temperatures are generated, high spots are created on the clutch face causing judder and often followed by slippage. A clutch that feels wooden, is past its "use by date" and needs replacing soon.

To retain the car's handling ability, it is necessary to look after the suspension system. Remember the car weighs 1400 kilos with you in it. That is a lot of stress when you hurl it around those corners.

Front Suspension rubbers start going soft at 40-50,000 miles with normal use.
Rear trailing arm hub bushes can need replacement at 30,000 miles.

Evolution front anti-roll bar drop links, (thats the knocking under the floor), 20K miles.

Shock absorbers start to go tired at around 60,000 miles, because they are tired and soft the temptatIon is to replace them with uprated units such as adjustable Koni's to
give you stiffer suspension. Remember, the original equipment is well suited when its in good condItion. (See performance parts)

The brake also suffer from the huge inertia they have to control, for this reason it is
common for the discs to be wearing out at 45-50,000 miles, pads at mid 20s

Exhausts last about 2-3 years for the middle end rear boxes. The front pipe generally last half as long again.

Turbo life is dependant on usage but generally at 80,000 miles, even it they have not suffered oil seal and bearing failure their efficiency is falling off as the turbine blades start to wear down. The blade tip speed is around that of a rifle bullet thus any small particles such it carbon from the engine, erode the blades We have known them to last 200,000 miles in the Lancia Thema turbo cars, but they are not working well by then.

If the car smokes when it is idling and gets worse the longer it idles, then the valve guides are worn, the only cure is to remove the head, overhall the guides and replace the valves.

Commonly asked Questions

My car is wearing the inside edges of the front tyres very quickly. Is there a cure ?
A: Yes, check the rear tracking.

My car pulls one way under acceleration and the other way under braking why?
A: Front suspension bushes worn.

What tyres should I fit?
A: Currently we are fitting Pirelli P7000's. We find that they give very straight running, do not camber climb and have good wear and grip characteristics (Wet and Dry)

My car Is revving up and down by itself instead of ticking over smoothly, what is the cause ?
A: The potentiometer is out of adjustment, the water temperature sensor is faulty and/or the supplementary air valve is sticking and the air-bleed screw has been wrongly set to compensate.

Why does my car keep stalling?
A: Potentiometer out of adjustment

My car is very jerky and erratic on the over-run, what is the cause?
A: Throttle Potentiometer set wrongly.

My car starts OK and runs OK hot, but as it warms up it misfires and sometimes gives black smoke from the exhaust, what is the cause?
A: Water temperature sensor faulty.

My car gives a big jolt as it gets to 4200 rpm on full boost and some times will not rev over this point, why ?
A: Bring the car to John Whalley's we can fix it. (Well you didn't think we would tell you eveything we know, did you?)
